Husband makes £45k, current rent is £1275 in the west end and council band F. No car but bills and it's just enough for a family of 3 and a dog to pay bills and have a small amount left over each month.

If that is your situation (2 adults, a toddler, a dog) and income range I would suggest rent around £1000.

These values are not accurate. I came to Edinburgh and now feeling the pain of trusting this information here and others around. People who move from another city or country will always get into more expenses, and knowing the right places takes time and money. The house market is really high, and for the average of £650 for a 1 bed room flat you get a very bad and old place. I dont go to restaurants because the prices are too high as well. They forget to mention here that an inexpensive meal to these guys means a soup + sandwich + chips. For this you better cook home. Minimum salary to have decent life is around 30K for one person. If you are a couple 40K in total is the minimum. Otherwise you just work to pay bills..

Hi Software guy. If you are permanent you should be looking around 30K and for contract anything from 300/day (depending on experience). I would say that the area in the town is important for Edinburgh. For example, low income areas exist but can be pretty rough, to be in a nicer area (or near the town) can be pretty expensive. I would say for a couple an income of 20K is probably as low as you want to go.

Hi, I am planning to move to Northern part of Edinburgh. I will bring my wife and 2 kids (7 and 4). The company offered me GBP 47K annum (before tax). I am planning to purchase a used car. Can I afford to live my life there ?. Thanks.

Hello everyone,

Just been contacted by a company for a job at edinburgh and I was wondering (considering I would be alone) if a 200£ per week to cover everything (rent, food, council tax, energy(heat/electricity..), broadband ...), or should I be looking at 300 ?
(I saw a lot of 1 bed rooom flats around 400£ pcm that would be 15-20 minutes away from the job in the center of town).

So basically can I live in edinburgh with a bit more than 10000£ a year, or is it more 15000£ ? (I would be paid more but the rest would used otherwise).

Thanks

As I am looking just now, a reasonable 1 bed flat in the city center or near Kings Building's costs from £500-800 depending on size/appearance. Council tax will add a couple of thousand pounds annually depending on the tax band (see Edinburgh city council website). Students are normally exempt and if your other half is the only eligible council tax payer then there is a 25% discount. If you are a student then a monthly bus pass is £40 and the buses are amazing. Alternatively an annual parking permit can vary from £50 to £200-ish. There are plenty of supermarkets and two people could easily live on £100 for weekly food plus treats/take away.
In short, £1500 is easily livable for one person and could likely stretch to cover two. However, might be best for your other half to find employment in the area too if you want to build some savings. Hope this helps!
