Yes you will be able to stay very easily. I can say 8000/- per month is sufficient for you and your family for normal living staying in near by location to city center which is connected well to city. 12000/- Should be for City center and little luxurious life
#Sukanta on Feb 20, 2014 :

I'm being interviewed for a job in KL and need to be prepared for the salary expectations.
I need to ask about the parts that make most of the expenses namely:
1- What is the cost of a two bedroom flat close by the PETRONAS twin tower ? Is rental paid monthly or annual, etc ?
2- What is the cost of the schooling considering I'm an expat ?
3- What is the cost of a proton Waja ?
It would be interesting to know what is the tax structure above 5000 US$.

How much income tax i have to pay in Malaysia if my salary is 5000MR. And how much saving will be there after spending for rent food and transport and Incomtax.
#Sai on Jan 16, 2014 :
@ #Nabinananda Pal

Since accommodation is provided, the mentioned MYR(4200) will be sufficient for daily expenses and can save more than 500 MYR per month. I think around 2000 MYR can be saved (even more, if you control on expenses)
on another note INR 42000 is NOT equal to MYR 4200. INR 42,000 is ~= 2400 MYR.

Can anyone suggest : My daughter got a job at Selangor (Lincon University College) with a salary of Indian Rupees of 42,000/- (cash in hand per month) which is equivalent to Ringgit 4200(pm) plus free accommodation, medical insurance, etc. Is the cash in hand is safe for daily Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks and Dinner and probably some taxi fare (cost per month). Can my daughter save around 500 Ringgit per month ? This is urgent as she needs to confirm immediately. She will go from India.

You can save if you cook and eat at home and also pack your lunch. I have rented an apartment with 3 bedrooms. I am using the master bedroom with attached bath. The middle room and side room is vacant. You can pay 50% of the rent and utility bills and use both the middle room and the side room. You can reach me at shaikh_cheenai@ yahoo.com

Hello,

I got a job in Selangor - Cyberjaya with an offer of RM 3500. I am married and my wife (no children as of now) is currently working as an education counselor in India. I am a Software Engineer and once we relocate,
1. Would RM 3500 enough to survive and save in Malaysia?
2. How hard would it be to find a job as a education counselor in Malaysia as my wife would like to continue with the job?

If I press hard, I can convince the firm to cover Medical but apart from that I have to accomodate myself on my own.

Kindly, let me know the average cost of living as well as good places to rent a moderate (~ 750 sq ft) 1 BHK flat with amenities like 24 hr power supply and water, fully furnished.

Regards,
Lokesh

My budget will be about 8,5K MYR a month so am looking for a place costing around 3K a month. For me cleanliness, security and view is more important then size and prestige. About 40-50m2. Is that possible or should i reevaluate my priorities?

Thank you in advance

Here I summary all your question

1. For the tax information, you can refer to this website as guide ‘payroll.my’. This is very useful website for tax in Malaysia. Usually, your will pay extra but I will get refund once you declare. Malaysia tax declaration is on April every year.

2. For those who seeking the school for their child, In Malaysia they are 2 type of school one is government type, the other is private. As I know foreigner will not be able to join the government school (which basically is free) but with option of private school that here we call international school. It will cost about RM/MYR1000++ per month/per child.

3. For your info, RM and MYR are same currency.

4. General cost of living in Malaysia
a. Telephone: call plan with internet RM40~150 depend on package. The major telecommunication here is MAXIS, CALCOM, DIGI & U MOBILE. For foreigner I will suggest DIGI. Bear in mind, for foreigner to register with package will need deposit of RM500. Another option will be pre-paid which is more cheaply and w/o deposit require.
b. Transportation: If you owned car, the petrol price for Ron 95 is RM2.10 per litter. For public transport, you can get monthly card which cost about RM30~RM100. Sorry I’m not so sure, coz most of Malaysian are having their own vehicle. You can check this website http://www.myrapid.com.my/.
c. For Living, I would suggest you check with this website for more guide of the price range www.iproperty.com.my.
d. Internet: the range are about RM100~RM250 from 5Mbps ~ 20Mbps. They are few brands here UNIFI, Streamyx they are same company under TM. P1.com.my and Maxis also internet provider.
e. Food: at medium range for a person I should say is about RM5~10 per meal.
f. Entertainment: Movie is about RM11. Beer at happy hour can get RM50 for 3 pint or RM90~RM120 per tower.
g. Medication: Generally most of the company will provide medical insurance, and some may cover the family as well.

#abhilash
With pay of RM3500. As you didn’t mention that you food & accommodation was provided. I would say it more just enough for living in Malaysia with a bit saving about RM500++. Is depend how your life style is.

#salim ahmad
You can check the above website to get more well the price of the property here. I suggest you can check on Cheres, Ampang area. With 2000 USD budget a month I should is more than enough. It will be enjoy your life here.

#Bala
With above info, will give you a guide of how much you can save.

#ahmet
You can check the payroll.my as above mention.

#Ravish
This salary pay I would say quite ok.

#Syed
Please refer to above. Hope it will help.

#Gaurav
Can try. Coz the most important parts was included in your package.

##Vijay
I think I had answer your question.

#Justin
Mount Kiara is one an expensive area in Kuala Lumpur. It will easily cost RM2~3000++ with fully furniture in small unit of condo. (Coz that area are all luxury condo).

#Kishore
RM3000 saving a month, I would say a bit difficult.

#Anonymous
Stay near Petronas tower area will be a bit difficult with the pay you have, coz it will easily cost about RM800~RM1000 for a room only include utility. And hard to get cheap food on that area.

#Saadia
For business, I can’t give any opinion. For education, you may refer to about info. Hope it will help.

I find the figures on this website are very accurate. There is no real answer to what is the living cost as it depends on individuals, lifestyles and location. However, I can tell you my living expenses as a student in Bangi (~30km from KL city centre) until 2012.

My major expenses are food and rent. I shared a 4-bedroom house with three students. My room is 8.5 ft x 9.2 ft with private bathroom (No AC). My rent, electricity and internet are about RM260 a month (I enjoy the amazed looks on people’s faces when I travel abroad). I spend about RM500 a month on food (mainly eating out at local restaurants and cooking occasionally). As a busy student, I don’t spend much on shopping and entertainment (probably RM200-300 monthly). I traveled to my university by motorbike and only spent about RM15 per month on petrol. I pay a medical insurance for RM120 monthly. My total monthly expenses is estimated to be RM 1,100.

Not having a car means I can save a lot on petrol, toll charges, parking fee, car maintenance and repair. My one year experience of owning an economical local car costs me about RM700 a month on these expenses (thankfully I don’t have to pay for car loan). Sadly, car has become a necessity for most Malaysians. I absolutely salute expats whom I saw cycling home from work near KLCC.

#Parthi on Sep 07, 2013 :
@Senthil Kumar
Congrats! That's a very well paying job. Do expect late hours and working weekends though...i've been there before :)

Anyway, regarding your concern, please refer below:
You did not mention where is your office will be, therefore I'm going to assume it'll be in Kuala Lumpur city centre.

With salary like yours, i'll assume you have quite a few years of experience in your field, therefore somewhere in your 30's. At that age, I'll assume a family as well, a wife and 2 kids will be used as an expenditure example.

Rental:
Rental in KL city centre or somewhere nearby, 3 bedroom 2 bathroom will be in the region of RM2,500 to RM5,000 depending on the location and age of the building. Budget RM250 for utility bills to be on the safe side.

Food:
This is where most of your money will go into. Budget somewhere in the region of RM3,000 to RM4,000 to feed 4 mouths per month. Cooking at home might be slightly cheaper as 4 mouths is cheaper to feed compared to eating outside.

Transport:
You did not mention if your company will cover your transport expenses or if they'll provide you with a company car. Assuming they'll provide a company car, but fuel is not covered. Budget RM200 to RM400 per month to be safe. Mind you, fuel prices here in Malaysia just went up RM 0.20 to a total of RM 2.10 (roughly USD 0.70) per litre.

Medical:
Try to get your company to purchase medical insurance for you and your family as it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Going to the see the doctor for a cough or fever costs around RM60 to RM100 per visit with medication.

Leisure/Lifestyle:
It's difficult to gauge the expenditure here, but with a salary like yours, you should be able to survive rather comfortable.

My recommendation:
If your office IS located inside KL city centre, try not to rent an apartment in the city centre as it's just not worth it. You can decide to rent an apartment in the surrounding areas, like Cheras, Ampang...etc as rentals here can drop significantly. RM1,800 to RM2,500 can get you a nice apartment, but transport will be difficult.

@muhammad amir
Forgive me but i'm not very experienced in the field of foreigners setting up shop here in Malaysia, therefore please don't flame me should the information I provide prove wrong.

From what I have heard is that you're required to setup a company in Malaysia, with a Bumiputra as a partner and the bumiputra has to have a certain minimum percentage ownership of the company.

Depending on the capital you put into the company, you're only able to obtain a working visa which will have to be renewed every year.

Please google more on this matter as I can't be of much help here.
#Senthil Kumar on Sep 06, 2013 :
I got an offer of 12000RM per month in Software Industry. What will be my average monthly expense and how much i can save. Any information on this would be a big help in deciding the same.

Thanks!
#Parthi on Aug 26, 2013 :
@Vijay
It would seriously depend on whether you are able to find a company willing to hire a foreigner as for most companies, it is still cheaper to hire local talent unless the foreign talent has something more substantial to bring to the table.

The salary would also seriously depend on the networth of the company and position you'll be accepting.

Salary can/might range between RM3,000 to RM7,000 or more. With too little of information, it's hard to help you gauge.

I would suggest first checking out job sites for available positions and then decide your next move.
#Anonymous on Aug 24, 2013 :
I am Vijay, i have 7 yrs of Exp in HR. Will i get a job in Malaysia and what will be the average offer?
#Anonymous on Aug 09, 2013 :
@Rishab,
Rental in Brickfields ranges from RM1,000 to RM3,000 per month. As for Cyberjaya, ranges from RM2,500 to RM3,500. Please bear in mind that quality of the apartment will affect the rental price greatly.

@shaital
RM1,800 with your employer covering none of your living expenses will be difficult to be honest. I would recommend finding a room to rent and perhaps being slightly frugal on expenditure. Please take into account the cost of your transportation to and from your employer's place as well.

@raghu
Animation companies in Malaysia is still in it's infancy, therefore there ain't many animation companies here. And because this is a rather new industry, I apologize that I am unable to provide you with an expected salary. I assume it should range between RM2,000 and above, I could be grossly mistaken on this.

Usually, with a 4.5 year old child, a family of 3 can comfortable survive with a salary of RM4,000 to RM6,000. This is the comfortable range of course. I have friends who have 2 kids and still survive on that salary. It all depends on what your lifestyle is like.

@Fadhel Ben Khalifa
Regarding Malaysia laws, wikipedia and google is your best friend in this matter. There's alot to read, especially if you plan to import your products. Please refer to Malaysia government websites regarding the import taxes/duties and regulations.

Starting your own business would be the better choice, however in Malaysia, as a foreigner, you are unable to open a 100% fully foreign owned company. You require at least 50% (last i checked) of your company ownership to be a Malaysian citizen. There are loopholes around this, but I prefer not to discuss this openly.

3 adults and 3 children expenditure should range RM 6,000 and above easily as rental alone for a 4 bedroom apartment will cost alot. I would safely recommend somewhere in the region of RM8,000 to be safe for a comfortable life.

Medical in Malaysia isn't too expensive, however I would still strongly recommend you purchase medical insurance for your entire family.

@Dileep Kumar H M
My dear friend, there's no such thing as a good salary :) but if you mean an average salary for civil engineer, depending on the years of experience and company, the salary can range from RM 2,800 to RM7,000 and above!

Cost of living for a bachelor in Kuala Lumpur is acceptable in my point of view, as I was once one myself. Rental for a 2 bedroom 2 bath outside of city centre, a room mate to share the monthly rental and utility bill costs an average of RM800 to RM1,200 per month per person. When I first started working, RM1,800 per month was a bit difficult to survive. But after 2 years, I was living rather comfortably with a salary of RM3,000.
#Parthi on Aug 09, 2013 :
@Farhan
Depending on your years of experience, your salary should ranger between RM2500 (entry level) to RM8000 and above for several years of experience. Cost of living ranges between RM3000 to RM6000, depending on your lifestyle and your two children. This includes your rent (3 bedroom 2 bathroom) outside of city centre with utility bills (RM2000), food, transportation, internet and monthly phone bills. Having two children in the mix will cause the monthly expenses to vary greatly.

@Zuno
Please see above for average cost of living outside of city centre. International schools in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur ranges from RM40,000 to RM100,000 per year, depending on your child's education level and school ranking.

Oil and Gas industry in Malaysia is a well paying job, if you can land the right job. Petronas is the biggest oil and gas company in Malaysia and from what i've heard, they pay well. I asked a friend who worked in Petronas and he said your job with your experience level, should average RM7000 to RM12,000 a month depending on your position in the company. However, keep in mind that job positions in the oil & gas industry in Malaysia is very competitive.

@Ali
With accommodation and transportation provided, you can save alot actually. RM3500 needs to cover only your food, lifestyle choice (internet, mobile phone bills etc). You did not mention if you alone or your entire family is dependent on your RM3500 salary, therefore I'll do my best to provide both:

If you alone,
You should be able to save quite a bit, you can easily save somewhere in the region of 50% of your salary, and if you're a frugal person, 75% shouldnt be a problem.

If you with a family (wife and one 7 year old child),
This will be difficult to estimate as food alone for the 3 of you would consume up to 40% of your salary. And with a child, toys and additional expenditure will increase your spending, as will you wife. Therefore, RM3500 for a family of 3, you should be able to only save perhaps 10% to 20% of your salary.

NOTE TO ALL:
all the amount stated above is based on an average person with an average lifestyle expenditure. Also bear in mind, that some companies in Malaysia require you to pay for the annual work visa, so bear that in mind as well.

I will check back often to this page to help out more members in the future.

#khan minimum design head will depend on what type of designing job you were offered. Local architects with 2 yr experience would normally get RM3500 - RM4000. Interior designer with 2 yr experience will get RM 500 - RM 1000 lesser salary than architects. Minimum rent for a 2 bedroom government housing is around RM 500. Minimum living cost if you consider on renting a room, taking public transport via bus or train daily, 3 meals per day, bills, and USB internet connection will cost around RM750 per month.
#Kai on Jun 08, 2013 :
Hey, to those who questions how much is sufficient to live in Kuala Lumpur, on average a person's expenses per month is around RM 1500. It includes food, rent, bills and daily commute via bus or train. If you want to live comfortably, staying in a 4 bedroom condo (outskirt of city center i.e 10 - 15 minutes drive to the city center), proper internet connection at home (high speed connection), party every weekend, 3 proper meals per day (eating out not home cooked), but commute by bus or train daily (as it is the best form of transportation available), prepare to spend around RM2500 - RM3500 per month. Renting a condo in the city center would be very expensive as most condo in the city center are either high-end condo or service apartments (rent from as low as RM5000 - RM20 000 per month)
