In India, I earn around INR 80K/month (RM 5400) and my monthly expenses including tax and other deductions is around INR 20K (RM 1350). So, I save around INR 60K/month (RM 4050).

Now, I got an offer from a company in Kuala Lampur. Salary - RM 8000/month. I just want to know what will be basic cost of living which includes renting a shared apartment, cooking own food, occasional dine out, transportation, paying mobile, internet, electricity bill etc. Also, what will be percentage of tax?
#Yap on Aug 18, 2015 :
Reading from the previous post I noticed the concerns are mainly made up of 2 categories:

1) Sufficiency of salary to live in KL
Based on my experience in KL (close to 40 years of local experience, yes I'm a local Malaysian), here are my personal opinion:
a) If you are a student (undergrad or postgrad), the "salary", scholarship or allowance that you receive may structured to cover your daily necessity for living. Don't expect to have a lavish lifestyle no matter where you are in the world when you are under such sponsored scheme.
b) Minimum salary in Malaysia is MYR900/month. A Malaysia citizen may earn MYR1200 - MYR1800/month working in McDonalds, hair saloon, Pizza hut, restaurant waiter, sales assistant in retail shopping mall or general operators. These people usually stay with the parents with minimum family burden.
c) University freshgrad, average earning around MYR1500-MYR3000/month. They need to start make a good financial planning to achieve a reasonable living standard either on their own or live with family.
d) Average 5-8 years skilled/experience grads or specialist technician makes MYR3000 - MYR6000/month. Where personally I think this is the median income in KL. You won't have a luxury lifestyle in KL but you live like majority of people in KL, even with a small family. Well budgeting allow you to dine in medium-high class restaurant once in a week.
e) I consider MYR6k to MYR10k/month as medium-high level of income. You may enjoy a little more options in your lifestyle, such as better car/house/meal and oversea travelling if you planned well.
f) for those who make MYR10k-15k/month, I consider this is a moderate comfortable income in KL if you planned well.
The above is a benchmark for citizen live in KL, exclude children international schooling fee (which will cost a bomb).
How much you can save? Depending on your lifestyle and financial planning. We don't expect people come to KL to live like a robot with fixed routine and eating same dish and doing the same thing everyday. KL is a vibrant city and full of excitement.

2) Job recommendation / offers
I think this is a cost of living index website and posting such question will usually receive very minimal respond.
#Yap on Aug 18, 2015 :
Kuala Lumpur or Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur & Selangor State) is relatively a very livable place compare to a lot of capital city in the world. There are plenty of lifestyle choices with wide range of price tag on it.

For individual without family:
You can have a cup of coffee in a mamak stall cost you MYR1.50 or you can have it in a cafe like Starbucks which cost you MYR15.00. You can buy a loaf of Gardenia bread that cost MYR2.40 for 2-3 days breakfast (with some fruit jam/butter) or you can dine in high end restaurant for about MYR50 for a course of dim sum. Transport may be a challenge and usually most of the citizen own a car. Car is very expansive here -- entry level 1.0L new local car (like Perodua Axia) cost around MYR25k, Japanese small car (1.5L) starting from MYR70k. Suggest to go for 5-7 years used car as a start up plan. If you don't want to queue in government clinic or hospital, a general practice clinic will cost around MYR30-MYR120 per visit with basic medicine; specialist hospital charges vary (consultation MYR100-MYR300; diagnostic fee vary, normal hospitalization MYR250-500 per day). You can choose to rent a small room (around 150-200 sq feet) in a terrace house that cost around MYR300-MYR600 / month, usually condo with facilities will be more expansive. Entertainment highly depending on individual lifestyle and expectation. We have free jungle trekking and waterfalls within 30KM driving distance, or you can get a VIP seat for an F1 racing at MYR3000/ticket.

For family of 2 adults and 2 children below 16:
A 1000 sq feet 3 rooms condo without furnishing rent ranging from MYR1200 - 5000/month depending on location in Klang Valley. Set aside minimum MYR300/month for utilities bill. Local kindergarten (age 3-6) MYR300 - 1500/month for half day per kid; MYR800-3000/month for full day per kid. Various International School are available, fee starting MYR40k / year to MYR100k/year per kid. Home school or private school with international syllabus are available for cheaper option (still need approx MYR15k-20k/year per kid). Grocery shopping: try local stuff instead of imported one to save money (I spend on average MYR800/month to feed a family of 4, kids are not malnutrition). Local C Segment 1.6L new car cost around MYR60k. Japanese C Segment 1.8L new car start from MYR100k.

For company sponsored executive level expat where money is not an issue:
Mont Kiara, Bangsar, KLCC are the famous areas with large expat communities. Purchase price usually MYR1200 and above per sq feet.
Personal driver /chauffeur salary starting from MYR2500/month (you need to give him/her a car to perform the duty); a live in Filipino maid salary starting from MYR1200 exclude one off processing fee about MYR10k and annual levy around MYR1200-1500.
BMW320 / Merz C180 / Lexus EX250 / Toyota Estima 2.4 new car cost MYR280k and above.

My personal opinion and hope this helps.

My expenses are very moderate:
1. House rent
2. Transportation (I will buy a used car)
3. School for my son.
4. Regular house hold expenses.
5. Weekly once going our for food and roaming.

Hope no inflation on next month for normalizing the oil price with no more government subsidy.
Inflation is not good harming everyone including local.
Controlling inflation depends on government where Thailand do a good job whereas Indonesia is very poor.
With falling oil price, inflation should no longer exist and deflation should come in naturally or else it is the government problem.

Anyway, no plan to visit KL and the main reasons are because of tourist traps where government seems not solving the old problem of tourist traps below.

list of serious tourist traps which people encountered according to the internet
1. Planting drug in luggage so coming out of the airport, you would be approached by police to extort all your fortune for alleged bringing drug or else landing in jail is your way out.
2. Fake police encounter and this would result you losing passport and travel money
3. Dishonest taxi where involves meter running many times faster than normal meter rate, running with luggage, robbing at knifepoint
4. Kidnapping

tourists certainly would not want to visit places where they would encounter the traps above and tourists have choices where they would spend their money and their first choice would be a safe destination.

Presenting police in uniform everywhere instead of letting them idle in the police station would partly solve the problem but police also must be disciplined to be honest and do their job at least and consequently these traps would no longer exist.
Kunming, China is a good example where you see police presence everywhere and feel very safe.

Until these tourist traps are not resolved, tourist industry of Malaysia would be getting worse.

What i read here, almost more people asking questions than people giving answers.

Why? Because most people (usually from India, rarely from the West country) asking other people to get cheap or free advice. If that your mind set as an expat, most likely you will get cheap salary as well or even get scammed!

What you need is to get the "Insider's Guide to Malaysia for Expat" ebook. This ebook is specifically for expat who like to work in Malaysia;

1.Cost of Living (100+ everyday items price typically for expats)
2.Jobs opportunity (100+ listing companies for expats, and how to get your spouse a job too)
3.Salary expectation (best job salary for you)
4.Housing (best/inexpensive place to live popular among expats)

and how not to get scammed and live successfully as an expat in Malaysia.

It's up to you, afraid to pay for real advice and trying to get free advice , you should ready to get cheap salary and suffer/regret later...

It's your call..

Visit here if you serious ;

Yes you will be able to stay very easily. I can say 8000/- per month is sufficient for you and your family for normal living staying in near by location to city center which is connected well to city. 12000/- Should be for City center and little luxurious life
#Sukanta on Feb 20, 2014 :

I'm being interviewed for a job in KL and need to be prepared for the salary expectations.
I need to ask about the parts that make most of the expenses namely:
1- What is the cost of a two bedroom flat close by the PETRONAS twin tower ? Is rental paid monthly or annual, etc ?
2- What is the cost of the schooling considering I'm an expat ?
3- What is the cost of a proton Waja ?
It would be interesting to know what is the tax structure above 5000 US$.

How much income tax i have to pay in Malaysia if my salary is 5000MR. And how much saving will be there after spending for rent food and transport and Incomtax.
#Sai on Jan 16, 2014 :
@ #Nabinananda Pal

Since accommodation is provided, the mentioned MYR(4200) will be sufficient for daily expenses and can save more than 500 MYR per month. I think around 2000 MYR can be saved (even more, if you control on expenses)
on another note INR 42000 is NOT equal to MYR 4200. INR 42,000 is ~= 2400 MYR.

Can anyone suggest : My daughter got a job at Selangor (Lincon University College) with a salary of Indian Rupees of 42,000/- (cash in hand per month) which is equivalent to Ringgit 4200(pm) plus free accommodation, medical insurance, etc. Is the cash in hand is safe for daily Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks and Dinner and probably some taxi fare (cost per month). Can my daughter save around 500 Ringgit per month ? This is urgent as she needs to confirm immediately. She will go from India.

I got a job in Selangor - Cyberjaya with an offer of RM 3500. I am married and my wife (no children as of now) is currently working as an education counselor in India. I am a Software Engineer and once we relocate,
1. Would RM 3500 enough to survive and save in Malaysia?
2. How hard would it be to find a job as a education counselor in Malaysia as my wife would like to continue with the job?

If I press hard, I can convince the firm to cover Medical but apart from that I have to accomodate myself on my own.

Kindly, let me know the average cost of living as well as good places to rent a moderate (~ 750 sq ft) 1 BHK flat with amenities like 24 hr power supply and water, fully furnished.

My budget will be about 8,5K MYR a month so am looking for a place costing around 3K a month. For me cleanliness, security and view is more important then size and prestige. About 40-50m2. Is that possible or should i reevaluate my priorities?

Thank you in advance

Here I summary all your question

1. For the tax information, you can refer to this website as guide ‘’. This is very useful website for tax in Malaysia. Usually, your will pay extra but I will get refund once you declare. Malaysia tax declaration is on April every year.

2. For those who seeking the school for their child, In Malaysia they are 2 type of school one is government type, the other is private. As I know foreigner will not be able to join the government school (which basically is free) but with option of private school that here we call international school. It will cost about RM/MYR1000++ per month/per child.

3. For your info, RM and MYR are same currency.

4. General cost of living in Malaysia
a. Telephone: call plan with internet RM40~150 depend on package. The major telecommunication here is MAXIS, CALCOM, DIGI & U MOBILE. For foreigner I will suggest DIGI. Bear in mind, for foreigner to register with package will need deposit of RM500. Another option will be pre-paid which is more cheaply and w/o deposit require.
b. Transportation: If you owned car, the petrol price for Ron 95 is RM2.10 per litter. For public transport, you can get monthly card which cost about RM30~RM100. Sorry I’m not so sure, coz most of Malaysian are having their own vehicle. You can check this website
c. For Living, I would suggest you check with this website for more guide of the price range
d. Internet: the range are about RM100~RM250 from 5Mbps ~ 20Mbps. They are few brands here UNIFI, Streamyx they are same company under TM. and Maxis also internet provider.
e. Food: at medium range for a person I should say is about RM5~10 per meal.
f. Entertainment: Movie is about RM11. Beer at happy hour can get RM50 for 3 pint or RM90~RM120 per tower.
g. Medication: Generally most of the company will provide medical insurance, and some may cover the family as well.

With pay of RM3500. As you didn’t mention that you food & accommodation was provided. I would say it more just enough for living in Malaysia with a bit saving about RM500++. Is depend how your life style is.

#salim ahmad
You can check the above website to get more well the price of the property here. I suggest you can check on Cheres, Ampang area. With 2000 USD budget a month I should is more than enough. It will be enjoy your life here.

With above info, will give you a guide of how much you can save.

You can check the as above mention.

This salary pay I would say quite ok.

Please refer to above. Hope it will help.

Can try. Coz the most important parts was included in your package.

I think I had answer your question.

Mount Kiara is one an expensive area in Kuala Lumpur. It will easily cost RM2~3000++ with fully furniture in small unit of condo. (Coz that area are all luxury condo).

RM3000 saving a month, I would say a bit difficult.

Stay near Petronas tower area will be a bit difficult with the pay you have, coz it will easily cost about RM800~RM1000 for a room only include utility. And hard to get cheap food on that area.

For business, I can’t give any opinion. For education, you may refer to about info. Hope it will help.
