Its always more expensive to live in city centers everywhere ,,especially in helsinki

food prices are in all same in finland...there is not much diffrence because grocerymarket is controlled by 2 monopolies: co-operative Sok and privateltd kesko,,,, now there is also german Lidl which is about 15 % cheaper than others

Finns buy food mostly from offers,,,, Look this numbeo comparison,,you can get good image from food prices

Apartments you can ask from real estates companies....also if you have friends here,,they may help you to find

usually it is sensible to find apartments near good public trafficx connectiosn,,,buses and trains.... optimal distant from big city centers is 20-30 km...... buy montky ticket for bus or train

If you want to live in Finalnd, contact local finland embassy in your home country

It is not impossible to get living permit if you can support yourself here: eg you have regular job or you get suffricient pension from your home country....students have different visa regulations....
study those regulations from finnish embassy pages

Hey I wanted to know if a stipend between 2000-3000 Euros/month is sufficient for a Phd student
Thanks in advance!!

To Arbimo: Probably you'll be fine with 2500€ and upwards (AFTER taxes) income. 3000€ a month net income would be ideal. It's indeed an expensive country, and in Helsinki rents are huge. As you can see, you have to pay around 1200€ only for 3-bedroom apartment outside of the center. Of course prices are little lower if you move to another city.

Education is of high standards although it's hard to say more without knowing which grade/level of education you were talking about.

Hi there. I have planning to work and live in Finland with my wife and my 1 son. How much is the monthly expenses for one little family like us? If anyone happens to know please share to us; and we're also interested with the education system you have in finland. Cheers.

Is it possible for an American and her son to move to Helsinki permanently? How do I go about that.
My sin is entering his sophomore year of high school. I'm retired and get disability and collect a good amount of money from Social Security.
I wonder how much a small house, 3 bedrooms would cost.
I'm so excited about your educational system for my son.

#Cathleen Butler on Jun 11, 2013 :
needing info on how long visas are good for for American citizens, how long can they stay in the country and is it possible for americans to study or work in the country? and if they study can they receive government assistance or use loans and grants from the u.s.a. to study abroad? I looked at price for apartment, are they ever rented for month to month? it would be for myself and my son or we could rent a room or two rooms. I can be contacted at Thank you, any information will be helpful. Also when are your months of spring and summer there?

Hi, Peter, please contribute latest data. We do archive old items periodically. Thanks
#Peter on Feb 14, 2013 :
I am afraid Helsinki prices are not that accurate anymore.
In the past couple of years food prices as well as transportation have increased more than 13%.

Current apartment rent and selling prices in Finland:

Vuokratasot = rent prices, myyntitasot = sellingprices, pyydetään = asking prices, tarjotaan = offred prices, maksetaan = paid prices
#KK on Jul 21, 2012 :
Please note that in Helsinki housing it is common to advertise rooms instead of bedrooms in apartments. The housing prices seem to reflect 3-room apartments, not 3-bedroom (i.e. 4-room) places.
#Shaman on Jun 21, 2012 :
For undergraduate students (at least for bachelors and masters), you can travel for half price provided you use a student travel card. It would mean that the monthly pass will be 22,50eur for a single region, instead of the typical 44eur.

Using the travel card itself can reduce your travel expenditure, if you plan to stay in Helsinki for some time. Here is a website with all the information about travel rates:

NOTE: Students will fall into "Value ticket, discount group 2".
