Vienna is the best place in the world it's so good it's made me live there

Vienna is still one of the - if not 'the' - safest large city one can imagine. That doesn't mean that there is no crime at all but its nothing compared to other cities in the US or other parts of Europe (let alone African and South American cities). Its laughable to argue that Vienna would be unsafe in any way. There are only about ~20 homicides per year (most of them are cases of domestic violence) and Vienna has almost 2 Million inhabitants. Again: That doesn't mean that there is no crime at all but most of the crime is related to domestic violence, theft, alcoholism, vandalism etc.

Vienan is not safe at all. The crime has quadrupled over the past 2 years.

I have lived in vienna for 35 years, always using metro, trams, busses. As everywhere in the world girls should avoid certain areas at night. In all other cases: if you aren't aggressive for yourself, nothing would happen. I had no bad experience for my own safety till now even at night and mostly I'm walking alone. Yes, there is aggressive crime in the city, but 99 % among certain foreign ethnic groups fighting against themselves. My wife works in an public hospital and all she gets are drunken people and these certain ethnic groups

I have lived in Austria for 6 years and visited Vienna on a weekly basis. Day, night time and felt very safe. Im not saying crime dose not happen. But if you use common sense you should not have to fear. All the subways have CCTV.

Laughing at the people who say 'walk in groups' and 'women are at risk'. I've lived in Vienna for four years and walk all over the place by myself. Never had a problem and don't know anyone who has. it's an incredibly safe city.

safety has dramatically decreased the last 18 months. especialy women alone are at risk and get regularly sexually harassed. avoid u6. check if you are followed. dont sit in subways when they are almost empty. vienna is getting uncomfortable. collegues are forbidding their children to use certain public transportations or pass through parks. in the akh the number of victims being traeted because of attacks has risen fourfold. racism is a problem as well. strangely imposed mainly by immigrants from the balkans and ex soviet republics. also 2nd or 3rd generation gastarbeiter (turks and balkans) are getting more frustrated and agressive.
dont believe the good safe image vienna has.

Vienna is not as safe as it is meant out to be especially for teenagers who start going out. I have been in Vienna for one year only and have been mugged twice once at the Donau insel and once in the ninth district in a well lit road both times involving men in their twenties with knives or tazers. Always travel in a group! Also the use of marijuana has increased significantly over the past two years but unless you live in a shady area it shouldn't be too much if a problem.

Vienna is quite safe. I walk around late a night by myself and feel safe. Of course you should be cautious and use common sense, but there is no reason to be fearful.
#Pete on Jan 14, 2014 :
The last ten years I never witnessed serious crime In Vienna. Only some drugusers hanging around.

Does 30% mean that the users providing these data have the fear of falling victim to a crime every 3rd time they leave the house?! This is utterly absurd. If been living in Vienna for 6 years and i'd say 0.3% would probably be too high. If you are interested in reliable data grab some translation-website and have a look at the official statistics:

I am a girl and walked through the dark alleys late at night in Vienna. Nothing bad has happened yet.
