we are considering buying a house in millers glen,swords ,i have small kids, is it a safe area now, seems schools like thornleigh educate together in applewood area, which is not good,can u tell me moving their is good choice.
I would personally recommend any new buyers to the area to move to either Boroimhe, Ridgewood, River Valley, Forest Road and the estates surrounding the town Centre.. They have great public transport going to town (especially Boroimhe!), the houses are strong, there's a good amount of things to do around them and they are very safe..
Boroimhe is my personal favourite.. There's a fantastic coffee shop and a SuperValu on your doorstep.. The buses completely avoid the Swords traffic, it's really close to the airport, the houses are surprisingly strong for their era, it's only a 15-20 minute walk to Swords town Centre and it's by far the safest estate in Swords..
In general many of the estates are a long way outside the town centre and many have poor access to public transport or go through a lot of others in order to get anywhere.
The estates in the town centre - Seatown (off North Street), St Columcilles, Oaklands, Longlands and Castle off north Main St and Carlton Court (south end of Main St south of Pavillions) are all excellent places to live, within walking distance of all ameneties and public transport. They tend to be overlooked in favour of newer estates but are bargains if you don't mind a bit of maintenance.
Then there are small to medium apartment developments
- North St - St Fintans (over Gourmet Food Parlour), Carnegie Court (behind hotel), Nethercross Court (behind Rocks funeral Home)
- Main St - Plaza, Fosters Way, Swords Central (these are literally built on top of the Pavillions)
- Main St/Well Rd/Church Rd - Cooldriona Court (On "triangle" between Main St & Well Rd forks, The Old Vicarage (Church Rd)
- Main St South - Milton Hall (beside boys school)
Most of these are mature and well appointed, though obviously as they were mostly built prior to 2001, have a high private rented element. However the result of that would be that unlike post 2000 apartments there would be no part V and most don't have any social rented element, if that is something that would bother you. Most of the tenants are middle class migrant workers who work in local businesses or services
The apartments in town centre are mostly older - Cooldriona, Plaza and Old Vicarage are all mid 1990s developments. If it matters, the newest "town centre" homes would be Carlton Court, and all the 3-4 bed units were built around 1989 (there is one tiny road in the estate to the left of the entrance, which was built in 1994 but its all split 4 ways vertically so there are 4x 2 bed houses rather than 2x 4-bed semis). Other town centre housing estates were built from about 1960 to 1970 aside from that one estate.
While some of the developments are technically a long way outside of Swords, some, for example Borimhe, Ridegewood and Holywell, on the southern side, are popular because if you use public transport you don't have the "pleasure" of sitting in a bus for 40 minutes waiting to get out of Swords
If you want to use public transport to go to work south of city, I'd suggest either renting or buying in Main St area or one of the southern estates or Holywell because you are getting on buses just before they leave the town, which can take a lot of time off your commute.
Contrary to comments below Rivervalley as a whole is mostly mature 1970s and 1980s builds - there isn't much antisocial behaviour.
If you are buying 2nd hand, I haven't heard of legacy defects outside of Thornleigh and Holywell. When people say there's defects in Applewood, its actually Thornleigh they mean - I haven't seen evidence of defects in the Applewood village estates themselves. And so far it seems to be mainly apartments rather than houses (though obviously that doesn't mean they won't be revealed in years to come).
The drugs are common after sunset and there are many local "groups" of guys doing whatever they want.
If you have a car or you are only hanging out in groups obviously is safe.
Ridgewood: My personal favorite part of Swords, well landscaped and good facilities for Sport and rec, The house are nice too.. Only issue is lack of public transport access..
Boroimhe: I've lived in Boroimhe for 15 years and Have liked it for all the time. Great community, very safe, big shopping area, close to airside, great public transport however it's massive and the shops are the only thing to do. However the coffee shop should open soon!
River Valley: It has got a bad reputation for what it was like 4 years ago but as of right now it's pretty safe, the park is close too so that's a plus.
Highfield and others on forest road: Fantastic leafy and mature estates with basically no crime, however they are more expensive than the rest of swords and there are never any homes for sale in these estates...
Town centre: lots of restaurants ,amenities and things to do and see like the castle, Pavilions is great too.. Be careful at night though.. Good town centre in general.
Holywell: Very isolated and boring, crime is quite high, ugly houses, nothing to do really... Transport is good though. I wouldn't recommend it..
Mountgorry: Nice area with low crime, lack of shops though but the pavilions is very close which makes up for it.. More expensive than other places..
Lissenhall/Seatown: Not much to do.. Transport is bad, safe enough, lack of shops. Nice walking spot along the estuary though..
Rathbeale road estates: Not bad. JC's is iconic. But boring none the less. Crime is average enough.. Transport isn't amazing..
Swords Manor: Not as good as other places. Transport is better than Rathbeale but crime is higher.. The shops are unsafe making them less usable.. The estates are boring..
Knocksedan: Isolated, steep price, nothing there... The jacko is beside it though which is a great place to walk during daytime, never go at night tho..
Applewood and Thornleigh: More dangerous than most parts of Swords. Houses have pyrite, the main street is nice, transport isn't bad but I wouldn't have this as my first choice..
Castleview and Ashton: Boring and no amenities at all.. Crime is slightly lower than Applewood but it's still not great.
Millers Glen: Newest part of Swords. Not bad, it has shops unlike Ashton. Energy efficient homes, but it's quite far from the town centre...
Glen Ellen and Bunbury: Average is the keyword here. Nothing special.. Close to Applewood village. Crime is ok.
Cian lee and lios cian: Very boring.. lack of trees in .. Looks desolite. Lack of things good or bad about it..
Brackenstown: Close to park. Crime is above average. Nothing amazing about it...
Broadmeadows and Jugback Lane: Leafy and nice. Close to town centre and JC's.. Affordable enough for the size of the houses..
It's got better over the years...
As YvWeiss said, Swords is the size of a city so obviously there is a bit of crime in some areas but overall Swords is safe enough... The drug problem is nowhere near as bad as neighboring Malahide and Portmarnock... As of right now, house prices in Swords have sky-rocketed so I'd advise buying a home now before it reaches Malahide and Portmarnock prices..
