Why are there so many scammers in Lagos Nigeria. Is it true there is no work there. I know a scammer and this is what he tells me. There is no work unless you are very well educated. Also does the power go off a lot there. I have never sent him money he only asked once when I first met him but as be talk he told me he was a scammer. I enjoy talking to him. He seems to want nothing from except to chat sometimes on line.I just wondered by there is such an increase in scamming. Is it because they are lazy and can make easy money or because they can make more money scamming than working. Thanks

#myself and i on Oct 21, 2014 :
I'm Nigerian. I believe Nigeria is wonderful. It's a safe place to be with diverse, beautiful and wonderful cultures. However, I cannot over emphasize a truth that only a dense and foolish man will bypass: NEVER TRUST A STRANGER. Every city, every land, every country promotes this rule. Why? Because human beings are dangerous. Whether black, white, brown, red or yellow. In fact, if you're very conversant with the news, you'll know that Nigeria is one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. Sometimes, I marvel at Nigerians who take this country for granted. The only challenge in this country is CORRUPTION. But then tell me, which country is free of corruption? India, UK, USA, Australia? NONE! The only advantage that some of these countries have is that their governments perform 75% of their societal duties. We don't experience bullying, outright rapes and serial murders like some countries do. Nigerians are FREE to express themselves. We lash out at the corruption of our leaders if need be, we openly practice our cultures and beliefs. It is only in Nigeria you find people pray for you when you start to demonstrate behaviours contrary to your gender. Nigerians stand up for each other. It's only in Nigeria people that don't know you mourn with you, rejoice with you, correct your child for you. Nigeria is a strong nation with a strong people. There is no country on the face of the earth where you won't find a Nigerian, because we can SURVIVE anywhere. If you claim to have been scammed, it's simply because of your stupidity and ignorance, it's not a Nigerian factor. You can get scammed by any one from any race, any country, any gender, if you allow it. There's a Yoruba Adage that says, "Eni to n wofa nifa n mu." Meaning: "It's the man who goes out looking for traps that gets trapped."

Millions of very smart people around the world have been scammed by these people. If you don't know what you're talking about and you obviously don't, you should keep your mouth shut!

I have been in a relationship with this guy in Lagos for 2years. He supposedly was stopped in customs and detained with a package containing cocaine. He said he didn't know there was cocaine in it. He was flying home to be with me. He is in jail and he says they want a $2000 bribe and they will let him go. I had sent him money to pay for the plane ticket. I am a nigerian and i would not deny the presence of scammers in this part of the world.. I happen to be a low-class citizen living on the main land in lagos and i know this scammers.. They are increasing in their number and so also are the tactics they use in defrauding people.. My advice would be for you not to trust anyone who claims to be white but is based in nigeria and is having issues and needs money to solve his/her problems..
Dont be suprised if the laday or man that appears to be an adult is actually a 16 years old boy..
The level of poverty in this country is what is actually leading more and more people to scam..

Important Notice: (1) don't ever send money to anyone you met online in Nigeria or even Africa, it's a scam. Please for your own sake, don't try it coz you'll regret it. (2) Don't go there to get married to anyone, they are using you as means to travel abroad and get a green card. They claim they love you but they are pretenders and wil hurt you alot. I'm a nigerian and nigeria is a safe country to live in, but anyone you met online claiming to be whatever is LIE.

#Fisayo on Mar 15, 2014 :
I am in total shock that people are even responding to many of these scammers. Guys, get a grip of your hearts and use your head.

Here are some no-brainers:
1) Dont send money to anyone/non-reputable company via the internet

2) Dont even nurture the idea of travelling to see your 'online' lover. How does that even feel safe to you even in your country (ok some countries are that safe)

3) Many jerks use religion as a cover for crap. The global list is endless starting with terrorists

4) There's something called the internet. I bet you can find similar stories like yours.

5) There are many local kings/chiefs but very few are important in our country. I bet i am even a prince if i check my ancestry well

6) If a businessman cannot get support from his local friends/family or bank, there's obviously a credibility issue.

Just for the record, I am a Nigerian; and we are hospitable and honest people. But there are those few ...

Hello, I have been trying to find out if this guy I met on Facebook is on the level or a scammer. He is Italian, Alex Andrew Barhling is his name. He sent me a friend request and I accepted it. He says he is a civil engineer working in Nigeria for several months. After talking for three times on chat he said he needed to come up with some money about getting his work and documents straightened out and he needed me to please help him. I told him no I couldn't do that and after a while he said he didn't have anything to eat and if I could send him anything it would help but I didn't so I didn't hear from him for a while but then he started in again saying he was still stuck over there and he's asking for some money to eat on and I would like to know if its a scam or not, cause I don't know what to make of it. If you could tell me I would be grateful. He says he loves me and wants to marry me and live in Florida at his home...

I was dating this young man from Lagos Nigeria for about 8 months and I have sent him money and some personal items for himself and his family!!! He asked me to marry him and I was going last November when my brothers intervened and stopped me from flying out!!!! Then I was to fly out this month, but ended up getting ill, I told Isaac and he was like so upset and like he didn't believe me for some reason?!!! Recently I have been trying to contact him and now I have gotten no reply from him at all!!! His celll phone is out and he won't pick up my text I leave him, I don't even know if he even gets them!!! I think it is so sad how they use "God" but then it's okay to take money and play with other people's heart and feelings!!! Lesson Learned...

I want to let people know of some scammers in this area that are using the USA military as their careful as the one I have chatted to is scarily good at this. He will try to hook you in then ask for money for "stuff". He then will try to say he's not eating good (and yes while this can happen in the military its very uncommon), he will also say his phone is messing up. When you let him know that you can't send money he will try to guilt you into it. Just be cautious and go with your gut. This guy told me it was extremely expensive to get items there and I see from your list its no worse there than here.

#Anonymous on Dec 12, 2013 :
Hi everyone, from all comments I have been reading, I believe I should say something, I leave people to their assumptions on a normal day

1) First of all saying all Nigerians are scammers is shallow thinking, if I may ask how many Nigerians have you dealt with? (TRUE : there are fraudsters all over the world including Nigeria but judging all Nigerians on a group of people is very bad). Just like saying all arabs or americans are terrorists.

2) Cost of living in lagos is high, TRUE it also depends on how much you earn and you are likely to get the money back one way or the other, it is ridiculous to hear that a loaf of bread is 15$usd and am sure people that say such don't live in Nigeria. The highest cost of bread you can get in Nigeria is 2$ : note : HIGHEST.

Its good to put things straight once and for all, and I won't encourage you to send money to any one anywhere, when you don't bear same surnames. Lol

Thanks :)

Just remember people asking for money for any reason is a scam. People will promise anything for money.

If the agency takes 25% of your salary each month for security. Look our security for what.

Just remember if somebody asking for money that you do not know.
Red flags everywhere, bells and whistles, horns and sirens all going off at once. Warning think twice and do not send money.

I can't believe some people are still falling for these scams. It's almost common knowledge now on how these people operate. You should never send money to any stranger over the internet, common sense should prevail, don't let your heart rule your head!!!!

The comment made stating that all Nigerians from Lagos are not scammers is true
I have communicated with a kind gentleman from Lagos who was extremely helpful and he took the time from his busy work life and his family life to help me.
He is the man who investigated my concerns and suspicisions and validated them that I was dealing with a scammer. He told me that I was dealing with a "smart" scammer. But in return I was the smarter one as I sought out some assistance.
Be aware that the scammers also check this site !!!
I found that out yesterday and " Frank" was very angry.
The thing that really gets under my skin is that he constantly uses his " Christianity" as his foundation in life. All the while he is trying to scam innocent women out of their $$ for the sake of love.... And that is ok in the eyes of The Lord. ???
If any you's out there need help and are suspicious that you may be dealing with a scammer. Email me and I will assist.
Anyone who asks for money that u do not know ,please do not send it.
Who knows, maybe I can make a deal with frank !!
But for the kind gentleman who helped me I bow my head in deepest gratitude And respect.
Not ALL Nigerias are bad.
#listen on Nov 05, 2013 :
Never ever wire money to anyone who claims that they need money for hospital or hotel or any reason to Africa they are all scams, most of these people are business men and they have plenty of money taking money from stupid people on the internet is agame for them, dont do it!!!
#Salvation Press on Oct 24, 2013 :
Well, all I have read on this site is fine. However, let's get things straight.
1. Not all Nigerians are corrupt.
2. Life in Lagos is not too expensive, if it is, the population of the city would have decreased by now rather than steady increment to about 20 million as at now.
3. If you are a foreigner and are paid in USD with accommodation and transportation taken care of, you can live more comfortably than many Nigerians except corrupt politicians.
4. An average Nigerian can survive with $6-12 per day while a foreigner whose income is about $1,500 or more can spend up to $50 per day.

My name is Karen and I live in canada. I met this guy on face book and his name is Tyler Gilbert and I believe he is a "romance" scammer
We have been chatting for two months now and he continually asks me for money. Claims he is a business man from the UK and had to travel to western africa to the city of Lagos to purchase goods for his art decor store.
When he tries to ship his goods to the UK the tax collector wants big bucks from him and his credit card will not approve the transaction so he asks me for the money.
I said no.
Now he says he loves me and wants to marry me...seriously!!!!
He has had 4 different cell phone numbers and chats on the net and his phone.
The name that he wants me to send the money to per western union is Frank Oviasuyi, which i'm thinking is his real name
Has anyone got any information on this? Please email me at

I am intending on coming to Nigeria to live for 4months. I have been dating a man that lives there. He has never asked for anything. How do I make sure he is not a scammer trying to marry for US green card.

I am traveling to Lagos in 2 week and I want to know if it is safe to rent a car there. I have learned there is Europcar, Hertz and Sixt available at the airport, but no Avis - which is my preference.

Can anyone advise me on car hire - at the airport. What is the best option and price? Also is it safe?

Hi ,

I have been offered a job in Lagos with salary under negotiation between 3500-4500 US Dollar. Please let me know how safe is to live in Lagos as i have only heard bad about this country and Nigerians
#fife on Jul 30, 2013 :
@David, I am a Nigerian who have also traveled a bit. I read several of the previous comments skewed at painting Nigeria so black. While some Nigerians are scammers (and there are scammers in every country in the world), there are yet many of us who will rather die than be unethical. Attempting to speak for the good in Nigeria may draw unnecessary criticism from users but I will do my best to educate those who are interested in learning about the 'good, bad and ugly' of Nigeria. You can reach me: Anyway, I currently live in Lagos, Nigeria (by far the most expensive city in West Africa) and the cost of a loaf of bread is just between $1 and $4 (Whoever said a loaf is 15.00USD is a liar. period)
#bihari rocks on Jul 23, 2013 :
a company is offering me a tax free 15,000 US dollar salary apart from accommodation, car, driver, bills and telecom services in lagos ,
currently settled in India.
Is lagos a safe country to live and would I be able to save money for future.
is 15,000$ enough to live there a safe life
#oleg yatskar on Jul 12, 2013 :
Think about it guys - based on info from 48 users in the past 18month the average salary (income) in Lagos is only $536, now and you are still asking if $1500-$4500 is good to live on...

I will tell you this much - Nigeria is a Oil based economy, a corrupt 3rd world country for that matter, meaning that the gap between the rich and the poor is huge. The fact that SOME or MANY prices are inflated in such a society does not mean that you can not find things cheaper and live on less. The fact that many Nigerians like to pretend that they are rich and require $5000 to live on is meaningless in that regard.

Now your standard of living might be lower if you live like a TRUE AVERAGE Nigerian...but that is another story. As a matter of fact this situation is reminiscent of many corrupt oil economies - I am from Russia, I know. I also lived with Nigerians who were from upper middle class and they were NOTHING but BRATS. So yeah I know

I don't think that living in Nigeria is too costly. If you want to live in hotels then their are lots of good hotels which are offering very cheapest accommodation services. for your convenience i am sharing a list of such a good hotels in Nigeria :

@ Eve not happened as such... The guy is a Nigerian... Do not waste ur money
#Tunde on Jun 14, 2013 :
@ dean, presumably, you have just fallen for a regular scam. I would suggest that you stop spending anymore and count your losses.

Naturally, no recruiter should ask you for money. if your services are really needed, the headhunter or recruitment agency will deal with all the troubles. You may need to pay for only visa fees (in rare cases). In anycase stop sending money to them if you still do. Move on or try to engage the law enforcement agencies.

Nowadays, a lot of effort is being made to catch these type of scammers. All the best in getting your money back.

I have talked to many Nigerian "woman" on yahoo messenger. They are all the same. They talk good at first, then all they do is ask of money and have so many excuses and delays to ask for more money. They all had big inheritances. Don't believe any of them, they are just scammers after your money
#Adrian on Jun 05, 2013 :
Has anyone ever heard from a girl named Jenny Benila. I agree with above comments. Everything to do with Nigeria seems so suspicious. I believe I am being played in a game of money extortion.

I have got offer from one the company based in Nigeria, they are offering 1500 USD per month. Company is also providing Accommodation for myself and conveyance. Currently I am based in India, kindly suggest me the food expense in this case.

Also suggest me the tentative amount which I can save on monthly basis. My location will be in LAGOS.

there is also a condition that they will deduct 25% of salary every month for 1 year as security.

plz suggest the food expense and will it be enough for a person to save in this salary?

looking for a reply from your side.
