The most important thing to consider is rent. A very small (200-300 sq ft.) studio or 1-bed apartment unit in an older building that is located near city center and on one of the MTR lines will cost on average HK$14,000 a month. A nicely located, newer apartment of that size can easily be HK$18,000 a month. If you live further from the city center, and maybe without quick access to an MTR station, in an older building that could use renovation, you could pay as little as HK$10,000 a month. But you'll need to accept that the flat you're renting won't be a showplace.
Forget owning a car in HK unless you are making a very high income. Taxes, parking, auto payments, insurance, maintenance and fuel for autos in HK can easily equal what you pay in rent.
Many other things like groceries, mass transit, utilities, etc. are very on par with just about any place in the world.
