Of course that with 5k you can live a comfortable life (everywhere in Europe I would say!), but it’s not a common salary. With a net salary of 2.2k, that’s the average net here on numbeo and that’s the real average for what I can see, it’s really hard to live. You can do it, but other than paying rent/bills/taxes/groceries you cannot save more than 200£ for other activities - I’ve not considered the price for using and paying for a car. In fact, as part of the aforementioned expenses, you have to consider also the council taxes that are not mentioned here (up to 200£/month depending on the area). Inflation is incredibly high at the moment, and the housing market is insane. It is nearly impossible to find a flat for rent, I would say surprisingly considering the prices. Just to give you an idea, now that I’m leaving my small 1 bedroom flat it will be rented at 950£ in a area that is 1 hour walk distance from the city centre. The announce for the flat was up for a few hours on their website and the day after there were 20 people viewing it.

Caleb, if you want to live a comfortable life I'd imagine something around £4k net income per month for a household would do.

I think it's doable with £3k as well, though you'd need to be quite careful with spending.

£5k would be really comfortable though. Ofcourse it all depends on the lifestyle in the end.

Moving from the US to Edinburgh. Want to make sure my budget is doable for Edinburgh. Any suggestions on a monthly target income for a family of 5?

Would like to know how much is rental of a small 2 bedroom house outside of Edinburgh

For Edinburgh, I wouldn’t say it’s more expensive than London, you just need to know where to go. The independent bars can serve you a good pint for under £3 still without having to venture into a Spoons or Nicholson’s.

Similarly food wise, you can’t go wrong with Wings, hidden down a side ally on the Royal mile.

Honestly, purely based on having lived in both, compared to London Edinburgh is a far more expensive to be in. Obviously rent aside, but as a matter of course, walking around London (even central places and the city) will tend to result in finding variations in the price of things like meals from the absurdly high to the actually quite cheap. Not so in Edinburgh, where everything is far more compact and, thus, within the tourist path, so all restaurants have a relatively high price with little variation. The figure here that really attests to this on this page is that it is the 20th highest price for an inexpensive restaurant in the world - that does not surprise me at all. Places which look cheap and cheerful are often quite expensive, and, contra the case elsewhere, unlikely to have as many things thrown in (tea is often sold separately in breakfasts, for instance, unlike the norm everywhere else in the UK). This is clearly a more minor concern than the rental situation, but it is important bear in mind if you are here causally or trying to save money on minor expenses.
