As compared to other mexician cities,Merida isint that bad.I went there a few years ago,and i felt very safe.

The reason rates are on the rise is due to rapid gentrification of Merida by both affluent Mexicans and "expats" the latter better described as seasonal tourists. Yucatecans take a front row seat to the trend that names their lives less affordable. This drop in socioeconomic statusbl drives people to crimes of opportunity. Just remember when times get tough and or the weather gets too hot the expats can afford to avoid the take a break from both types of heat.

I don't like the crime rate increased so fast in the last three years... can someone explain why? But from my experience it feels safer than Baltimore where I am from, the people are pleasant. I ran an issue with an AirBnB host when I got here though...

I feel much safer in Merida than in the USA. Locals are friendly. Fresh produce is ample and very affordable. Outside the city center you'll find many wonderful areas to live. Clean and relatively quiet. No pollution. Mexico is a very active country so noise is common. I enjoy the liveliness though. Very walkable and transportation is plentiful and cheap by the US standards. Gentrification is an issue especially in Centro. Shopping local is very affordable and recommended

Wren, locals here in Merida are not Mexican.( Most ) are Yucatecans. Go to Scotland, sit in a pub and tell the locals they are Brit. Yucatecan people are of Maya heritage, no Spanish blood lines
