is there any one what about the safety of Margdeburg..?
Elmo on May 24, 2022:
@ Dan: I can't give a simple answer when I think about it, because Hamburg is one of those cities where sometimes just one block separates the bourgeois from the poor neighborhood. At least that applies to the inner-city or urban districts. In addition to the districts you mentioned, I would also avoid Jenfeld, Osdorfer Born, Neugraben-Fischbek and Lurup, but these are all neighborhoods that are pretty much on the outskirts of Hamburg. Don't worry too much. Hamburg is relatively safe in most areas. Districts like Osdorfer Born or Neugraben-Fischbek are so far away from the downtown that I wouldn't move there just for that reason alone.

Hi, I'm about to move in to Hamburg in October due job. I would like to ask you guys in which parts of the city should I look for an apartment and which neighborhoods should I avoid and dont rent there due lack of safety? I understand from previous comments that Billstedt,Kirchdorf-Süd, Osdorfer Born or Steilshoop are parts I should avoid, is there any more nowadays in 2022 that should i be wary of? I'm basicly looking for some safe neighborhood nothing too posh.

I live since 10 years in Hamburg 10 min walking from the train station. I never even heard of somebody that got robbed or attacked. I wouldn't listen to much at people from the countryside that "feel" that Hamburg is a dangerous city.

I was born in Hamburg. I am now 35 years old. I have been waking around Hamburg alone since I've been 9 years old. (Even younger in my neighbourhood) I have never ever (!) felt unsafe. Even now me and my friends would BBQ/drink in summer in the municipal part until 2am at night, and would feel perfectly safe to walk home alone through the dark park at night. It's completely normal here. No one I know has every been attacked/robbed etc at night when walking home.
Sure you see your drunk guys that you may pass on occasion and try to talk rubbish to you, but when you do you just ignore them and they don't do anything.
I don't know what rini is talking about. I think Noah describes it well, and I would agree with Paul about the areas you may want to avoid at night - but they are only a few and no tourist would ever go there.

Hamburg is a very diverse city and this diversity also will have an impact of your security feeling. The level of security depends a lot in which area of the city you stay. The district of St Pauli can be very sleazy in some parts, but most of this neighborhood is quite fun. To avoid(specially at night) is a street called Steindamm nearby the central station, because of junkies, agressive crackheads and street hookers. The underprivileged and rough districts like Billstedt,Kirchdorf-Süd, Osdorfer Born or Steilshoop are mostly in the suburbs, were never a tourist get lost and also the most Hamburg citizens never put a foot in it. So there is no need to worry, although you should take a critical look at the legendary story about the so called "wealthy" Hamburg. After Frankfurt the city of Hamburg has the largest income inequality in Germany and one of the highest poverty rate of children and pensioners among Germany.Anyway, Hamburg is besides my special remarks, not dangerous in the most inner city districts and pretty safe in the posh areas around the Alster-lake and in the western suburbs like Blankenese. You could probably leave the door unlocked in the wealthy areas( However dont try it)
