I grew up in Montreal! very lovely city and very very safe! I never got into very serious issues! the only thing is that once I was very wasted and alone. Some guys pretended to help me and then took my phone and ran away.

Downtown Montreal can be dangerous but you can tell the difference between The Village (Berri-UQAM) & Shaughnessy Village (Atwater), the former with agressive drug addicts and many closed stores while the latter is more dynamic and homeless people just take care of themselves.

Montreal was absolutely destroyed by idiotic individuals that imposed law, resulting in the destruction of small mom & pop shops, luckily the city is starting to get better overall, still has a long way to go but people here are resilient.

Mtl is definitely not safe. Shootings frequently, but most of all, mentally ill people everywhere! I used to feel safe walking at night with my big dog, but not anymore. Too much drug dealing and organized crime, it affects you even if you are not involved.

In general, people are not friendly, winters are extremely harsh and last 6 months (yes, it snows from November to April with the occasional storm in May..) and the city is filled with potholes. There's much better in other cities.

I love Montreal - it has an amazingly vibrant, accessible, and beautiful downtown. Public transport is efficient and reliable. There is an abundance of green space. People are friendly. Lived here for 30 years and I look forward to the next 30!

This city is in a state of disrepair. The streets are notoriously bad, filled with p0th0les but that has been the norm since the Maf1a took control of road contracts with the help of corrupt politicians. The "prized" public transit system is l1ttered with need1es and literal human sh1t due to h0meless being allowed into the Metro for free. The subway r-e-e-ks of p1ss and c1gar and also has frequent DAILY disruptions that normally last 1 to 3 hours. The fare pricing is hilariously expensive for the pitiful service it offers almost close to NYC (which has the highest Metro prices in the world). Wages here are the lowest of any Canadian cities while the tax burden is gigantic due to high residential and gas taxes. Honestly, if you were unlucky enough to be born in this certified SH!THOLE you're #1 priority would be to leave it. However, housing prices are expensive in every Canadian cities so I suggest you try your luck down South, if you have zer0 applicable skills then crossing the border into the USA and living there 1llegally would still be a better fate then growing old in this desp1cable city that perfectly indicates where Canada is heading.

I have seen too many times mentally ill people in Montreal shouting in the streets and acting as if they were going to punch someone at any moment, facing any person they encounter. Apart from those specific individuals, the city feels very safe.

honestly your biggest worry would be all the racist french people they're feral

I don’t go to Montreal often, but at the bell centre the crime can be high at times. Specifically after a loss in the playoffs. Remember the time in the Stanley cup all the people. I would off felt unsafe. Across the bell centre a person threatened to fight another person. Other then that Montreal is great. Avoid downtown areas at night though.

It's generally safe here, but I do believe the economical recession brought by COVID-19 epidemic is driving more people to the route of crime due to their lack of money for living or them simply stressed out.

To add to my earlier comment depending on where you are in the city it can be defo wayway safer, like I’m pretty young and I started to do dumb stuff at an early age talking to the wrong people and doing the wrong things and I would still walk really safely around at night, its a 40 min walk from my home to downtown and I walked from there to my house at night without anyone talking to me or harassing me. Not that it doesnt happen just didnt happen to me, some dudes are defo relentless though and Ive had situations where I had to yell and scream and cuss but the dudes wouldnt stop following me but theyd eventually stop and I was never on the street alone that wouldve defo made it more terrifying but im sure there are dudes like that everywhere in the world I don’t think there are more guys here like that than example California

Honestly so many ppl are caping. I have been drunk and high talking to strangers in mtl not that it’s necessarily safe to do so but nothing ever happened to me nor was I taken advantage of, yes, once I was at the parc and a guy clearly tried to sneak up on me from behind and attack me and do idk what but my reflexes stopped him and I scared screaming and yelling and he ran away. Alot of racist french people as someone born in Mtl and an immigrant I can definitely tell when someone is racist and trying to be shady about it(I always end up being right cuz racists always slip up) you can also tell by the looks they give and the attitude and surely it shows more to someone who was born here since “les quebecois” can be very fake and hypocritical. There are definitely bad neighborhoods, theres a lot of gang violence and robberies in Cartierville and St-Laurent and Laval and Parc ex still less than Cartierviller and St-laurent, I can say first hand because I had friends in gangs and etc and them getting killed but random strangers getting killed I think it happens less often. Definite drug issue and corruption issue but I think basically every place is corrupted.
