Tehran is a big city. In northern parts (closer to mountain) living cost are always higher than the southern parts. At the center part of Tehran (Ferdousi street) you can exchange your money to local currency at the best rates. Try only money changers in the shops. Shop money changers do not speak English very well, but be sure they are very helpful, and they do not cheat.

Cheap Hotel, handicrafts, souvenirs, also available in Ferdousi street, walk from Ferdousi Square to south of the Ferdousi street.
After or at the end of Ferdousi street toward south, you can find the old market (Bazzar-e-Tehran), with its old construction, and many people who work there.

These prices are way above the average cost of living here. They are inaccurate even for the most expensive community in Tehran. Please correct the entries.

#Hassan on Mar 22, 2014 :
The price given here is much higher than real price in Tehran probably due to fluctuation of foreign exchange in Iran. nowadays, each USD is Exchanged to about 25000-30000 IR Rial. So some of given price are exactly false. As an illustration, the highest price of gasoline is 8000 IR which equals at maximum 0.32 USD. In addition, there is a big difference between the price of domestic car and foreign made car. As an example, purchasing of a domestic made C class sedan car (comparable in size to Toyota Corolla) costs 10k-15k USD while you must pay at least 30k for its foreign made equals. The differences in other items such as groceries and clothing is about 15-30%. For example, you can buy a pair of leather shoes by only 30-40 $. Since there is high inflation and exchange fluctuation in Iran, I think the prices must be updated every each season!
#Anonymous on Feb 25, 2014 :
I want to live in Tehran along with my family, kindly any one inform me what are the latest prices of 2 bed room rent. in side the Tehran city or outside of city and about Advance money deposits.
#Hasan on Feb 03, 2014 :
Prices reported here for beer and wine refer to illegal purchases of smuggled beer and smuggled or home made wine. Alcoholic beverages cannot be legally obtained in Iran. Taxi fares reported refer to "shared taxis"( i.e. each of the four passengers). If you want the taxi to go strait to your destination, you need to pay four times as much. A 5 km bus ride or a 12 km subway ride (including line changes) costs $0.10 one way so the monthly cost round trip for a combination ride (which gets you almost anywhere in Tehran) cannot exceed $12 a month. Certain categories of individuals (e.g. the disabled, senior citizens, ideologically favored "mobilized" citizens, veterans etc.) get the cheaper monthly pass. Average prices reported for buying a square meter of an apartment in the city center are for "newly constructed" apartments, "seven-year-plus" apartments may cost considerably less. Prices reported for petrol are for purchases within monthly quotas (first 60 liters), beyond that the "free market" rate is twice as much. Domestic cigarettes cost as little a 30 cents a pack. the Basic Iranian-made car costs USD 6000. Also salaries reported are based on former exchange rates, they amount to considerably less today. I am writing in early 2014, the "floating" exchange rate (as opposed to the 25000 rial "reference rate," which you can only get with a big beard and powerful connections) is 30000 rials to the USD.

but, you can check it for 2Mb, Unlimited, with download speed about 320 Kb= 24$ (it is for Telecomm), but is limited for some people.
in private corporation, price increase. for example, 2Mb, unlimited, with download speed about 120-200 Kb= 215.6$ . for 6Mb unlimited you can calculate.
this below link is for one private corporation that you can check price of 2Mb unlimited there:

Dear Loup, Hello.

I'v read your mentioned says and gonna reply you.

What's dependence betwixt Iran's price and Arab countries price ? Arab countries consist of 22 countries and have their own partnership together. Also the mentioned detail are lot appropriate cause you can take a see to cost of living in Dubai which is plenty exorbitant !! Good luck.

1) cannot identify the prices for the beer and alcohol in general. Being the official Muslim republic, all kind of alcohol is considered as illegal and cannot be sold in the shops. There is so-called black market, but I believe there is no reason to give those kind of prices

2) Price for the rent of apartment in Tehran depends on the deposit, you pay before move it. Example - for 1 bedroom apartment in good district you may pay 25 mil. toman (around 7000 USD) deposit, so the price for the rent will be around 700K toman (180 USD), in case you pay 10 mil. toman deposit, the rent price for the same apartment will be 300-350 USD (around 1 mil. toman)

3) there is no international release movies in Iran's cimena, so the normal price for the local movie is 2.5 USD

4) the price for the petrol cannot be given really, because each month the owner of the car get a donation from the government to use the certain quantity of the is still paid, but in this case 1 liter of petrol is around 10 cents.

to rent 70 to 80 meter flat will cost you aound 50,000,000 to 12,000,000 rials, that also depends on which part of terhan you want to get.
where i live is around 10,000,000 rials in shahran search it on google earth.

#nikto on Feb 19, 2013 :
I added a 1000 USD entry for Internet connectivity. The 30 USD figure given was entirely off the mark.

Residential ADSL connectivity is limited by state mandate to 128 Kbps. If the ISP bypasses the mandate the rates provided never exceed 2 Mbps, with much fluctuation in service quality and meddling from upstream bandwidth provided by the state.

Pars Online, the eminent connectivity provider in Tehran, sells such 2 Mbps line at 3,590,000 IRR per month. Pricing scales faster than linearly with increase of bandwidth (unlike in developed countries). So a hypothetical 6 Mbps line (which does not exist to begin with) would cost in the vicinity of 1000 USD/month.

A dedicated leased line at 1.5 Mbps with SLA for businesses costs usually around 250,000,000 IRR per month which would exceed 10,000 USD/month even at current highly inflated exchange IRR-USD exchange rate.

And thank you for this good resource.
#Kamran on Feb 03, 2013 :
Hi Kamran, thank you for your suggestion. After a yearly fix, I might decide to delete old data for Iran due to high inflation. But anyway, analysis might be broken if inflation is as it is.
#Kamran on Feb 01, 2013 :
Today's currency rate is 1 $ = 40000 Rials.
10 days ago it was 1 $ = 33000 Rials.
Two months ago it was 1 $ = 27000 Rials.
Six months ago it was 1 $ = 18000 Rials

One week ago Price of so called "Pride" the most commonly used car in Iran was 13000000 tomans. Today it is 18000000 tomans. Next week it can be 25 or 30. No one knows!

Indeed Tomorrow which is Saturday, US Dollar can rise to 50000 Rials (or 5000 tomans)
Alles ist moglich in Teheran!

btw I love all human beings including Arabs and everybody is welcomed here and I strongly recommend that you come here to experience the life we live here!

I Strongly recommend to the manager of site to omit all of the data above and let us enter new information based on US Dollar.

Thank you everybody

hi,we dont have 6mbps adsl, here are the real prices of the internet:
128 kbps= $3.00 , 1GB per month (using Sabanet internet provider is better, cuz by using 128kbps internet, u will have the 2mbps speed)
512 kbps= $8.00 , 1GB
1 mbps= $10.00 , 1GB
2 mbps= $11.00 , 1GB
above list is for adsl internet, i recommend to use WiMAX, cuz it's much cheaper than adsl.

#MohammadReza on Sep 21, 2012 :
The current price in the website for a monthly subscription of the Internet (6 Mbps, Unlimited Data) in Tehran, Iran, is far from real. The state has banned subscription of higher-than-128Kbps for real individuals since late 2005, unless they're academics or provide proof of working from home. The fee for a monthly subscription of a 512 Kbps ADSL line with 'Limited 3GB monthly traffic' which I currently have, is $16. Thee cost of a 6 Mbps 'unlimited' subscription will be at least in excess of $400, and I won't be surprised if double that.
#Iranian on Sep 04, 2012 :
The thing is that the prices have increased at different rates, so the inflation is not constant for all goods, but we can assume an average of approx 100% inflation rate (a year)since 2011.
It is simple: US$ to Iranian Rial was around 10000 in January 2011, that rate has increased to just above 22000. Thats 2.2X in 20 months (120% inflation). If you apply the 25% inflation we always have, putting the altering currencies aside, we come to the 200% inflation in the last 2 years

P.S. I am not sure if this information is any useful to anyone, since everyone in Iran is already aware of the situation, and anyone abroad is not dumb enough to consider moving to Iran, and unfortunately things are getting worse at a daily basis

#Mladen on Aug 19, 2012 :

Sorry, I don't have your email address :-). But anyway, soon I'll change the calculation engine to consider local currency rather than USD/EUR whenever possible.

I don't have control over exchange rates used, I'm pulling it from other feed providers.

So at this moment I cannot do much to improve problems with data for Iran regarding high inflation and unclear exchange ratios.
#Pedram on Aug 19, 2012 :
the data I entered last I guess I considered official exchange rate 1US$=12,260 IR.Rial
#Pedram on Aug 19, 2012 :
Thanks. I see some improvements this time.
you know, may be there are two problems for Tehran to consider. to improve the data.
First we had high inflation rates last year, officialy 23% but it is fake. real figures are something 60%. for foods 200% ! Fantastic ? we are dying from hunger. soon !
Second source of problem , may be because people try to convert costs from Rial to US$, and we have two different rates right now, official 1us$=12,260 IR.Rial and black market rate is 1Us$=21,500IR.Rial
I am eager to help. Please contact my email if I could figure out something. At least I can give you median prices more exactly than figures now here on the site.
My suggestion for your data improvement for Iran: 1- to keep us$ as base currency, so that sharp inflations and price change with IR.Rial to be reduced. Give a comment for each one who would like to inter new data for Iran to consider "Market us$ exchange rate" and then convert the price and not the fake official rate which noone could access except ......
2- To filter old data with median prices which you can obtain from new data with the new comment and Also I can give you for my city Tehran, consider old data as spam
Sorry for the Inconvenience for Iran. we are unofficially in war my friend.
#Mladen on Aug 09, 2012 :
I reviewed your data as not spam - I'm sorry high inflation and many different entries for Tehran creates a problem to have a good dataset for this city at the moment.
#Pedram on Aug 08, 2012 :
Fantastic ! I admire this website , I am living in Tehran. when I saw data for my city, I realised data is old. you know, with inflation higher than normal, old data must be ommited from calculations otherwise give wrong results.
So I entered recent data, but most was considered as spam. Funny , it seems the algorithm they use do not work for inflations higher than 50% and we had 200% inflation in foods last year.
Somethings in Tehran are very expensive if you copmare, house prices are too expensive, rents , and maximum available internet speed is 1024 Mbps and if unlimited it could cost us more than 100$/month because it is considered very luxerous by the government!
Laily , stop untill we make our land free then come to visit. just few years.
And the Syrian armed man , please stay with Bashar. you are absolutely unwelcome in our country.

#ArashM on Jun 18, 2012 :
To Dan

It seems somehow awkward how people live here in Tehran, as the expenses are so high and the income is not relatively high and there might be some explanations for that, however one important thing is the culture of the people and the different attitude people have towards spending money and consuming.
I believe you can not compare two cities only by economic indexes and understand what`s going on there!
#HAMED on Jun 03, 2012 :
hey buddies , i read your comments so it was question for me What drives costs in the IRAN ?

A- Cash payment of government subsidies
B- Increase in foreign exchange rates
C- Sanctions of foreign countries
#arash on May 29, 2012 :
I don’t agree with inflation rate . inflation rate is sth around 70-100% per year, that's a rule ;-). But this year within 6 months most of the items increased 100-150% not 400%.
#ali on May 29, 2012 :
you right Dan,
tehran everything is very expensive , inflation is more than 400%. you know what it means? 400%. but our minimum wage is funny. there is no job available for making ends quality of living . this is the worst place for living.
no job no money no entertaining there is no tourist.

I am wondering how people are living in Tehran???,
cost of living is much more expensive than North America.
here you can find a an apartment in (main downtown) $800,
others things are cheaper than Tehran (by seeing the your data).
I have serious reservation about the data's accuracy!
How come millions of people are living in Tehran without high paying jobs,
even if they are making 1500 dollars or more than they are just get even!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Mase and Mohammad, there are so many entries for Iran which are so different or speaking in statistical sense, deviance of entries for Iran is very huge that's why my algorithms cannot figure out the stance. Also, it looks like due to play with exchange rate things are changing very fast over there.

i tried also to enter some REAL data and it recognized ma also as spam, we who live here in Tehran know that the cost of living has tripled in some fields in the past year but people looking for data on your site will not benefit from our knowledge
#Mohammad on Apr 11, 2012 :
I just tried to add some data on living expenses in Tehran, but your website recognize my entries as spam!
I think it is because of sudden changes in Dollar value which is increased to 1900 RLS in few months.

I live in Tehran, In my opinion the average of monthly salary in Tehran doesn't exceed 400$ !

Any way, thank you for your useful website.

Tehran was not a expensive city realy in before, but the serious subject is important we have to know is:

Today you need to:

The minimum rent value fora1 bedroom apartemant in the away of city is:
7.000.000 Rial Or 1.260 $ Just per 1 mount without ant additional equipment.

This is that tehran that was 3.000.000 Or 500 $ in 4-5 years ago.

Iran has highest level inflation index in all of world !!!

People are under presure and has Serious problems.

Please listen to our says the leaders from the world (Mr.Barak obama and etc...)

Thank You

Thank you for the useful data,

I am from Iran myself and i used the data just to make sure the data about other cities are correct.

Since about two months ago the value of dollar increased to about 20000 Rials, i believe you need to make a few changes in the data, for instance the average monthly salary now has decreased by 1 third considering the new value of dollar

#Mohsen, it is a case in many third world countries that with the average salary you cannot pay the rent for 3 bedroom apartment. Even working for top notch companies in a country with a property bubble you might have to pay 75% of one salary for rent. Insane, isn't it?
#Mohsen on Feb 15, 2012 :
something marvelous!
Income: 820.00$
Rent Per month
Apartment (1 bedroom) in City Center 653.93 $
Apartment (1 bedroom) Outside of Center 520.00 $
Apartment (3 bedrooms) in City Center 1,260.00 $
Apartment (3 bedrooms) Outside of Center 1,198.00 $
this means rent ratio per income is greater than 80% and up to 153% !!!! how is it possible
#amir on Oct 31, 2011 :
