Hello,
Would like to know if expats are welcome in Cotacachi or not please and how the crime rate is. We've heard because it is further inland, the possibilities of getting robbed or properties broken into is higher. We definitely would be coming to show our respect for the locals and are taking conversational Spanish classes prior to an 8 week visit next summer. Looking to purchase a small (not super fancy) home with a little bit of land but not sure if this is the safe way to go or not because I can't seem to get a response back from any expat living in Cotacachi at all. We're familiar with traveling safe, living safely in foreign countries to a degree, and are super excited about the possibilities of living in this what appears to be a beautiful (in many ways) smaller town. Thank you for reading this and in advance if anyone can respond to my inquiry about living safely in Cotacachi. We just don't want to have to be worried about being robbed every time we may leave our home. Thanks again, Kim.

I love this town, very nice and has zumba classes a few times a week and other activities. Im a young person in my 20s who is from the US living in ecuador for 6months. There plently of people who can speak english here but i think this seems more of a tourist town. For rent Your better off just waiting till you get to ecuador to look for a place to rent. If your willing to simplify your life you can find places to rent as low as 250 a month or towns near by can find for low as 150 a month and that can be up to 3bedrooms house or apartment. You just have to really look and ask around (not all advertise that there a place available). My suggestion from experience dont give them anything more than one month deposit if the owners ask and are ecuadorean. It really hard to get your deposit back when that times come (Sadly most are dishonest in that area).

Cost to take a bus has gone up use to be like 25cents to go to otavalo or 45cents to ibarra but now been raised up to minimum as 45cents and it 55cents for one way bus to ibarra. They dont always give full discount too if your a senior or child even if have permanent resident it depends on the person who takes the money. I have spent as low as 6.00us dollars a week on fruits and veggies at the markets and most willing to bargain just dont except the first price. ask around and you'll figure out what the fair price.. And to eat out depends What you like i eaten some meals as low as 2.50 and just mainly 1/8th chicken with rice and french fries. And there some places for the same price in other towns near by you get a drink, chicken soup and course meal just you have to look to find those places. There food is pretty bland overall but im fine with that.

If you want to get along with the locals try to learn spanish they aappreciate if you.at least try to talk to them in spanish. respect there custums and culture.expect things are done differently no.point getting upset cause food not done the way your use to having it done. they have different vuew what good food is as we do.
